I switched to jazz piano because my mom thought it would be good for me just to learn some other stuff. I was pretty lazy, just ’cause you always want to practice things you don’t do. Were you always drawn to jazz as a genre or did that develop as you began to fashion your own identity as an artist? I think it happened because I studied classical piano. While awaiting the release, which has been two years in the making, fans gather at her top-secret, James Bond–themed pop-up shows, filling underground venues that have been transformed into 007-style salons. Since releasing her second single “Made For You” in 2013, for which Tony Kaye of American History X directed a hauntingly beautiful music video, Niia has been busy completing her debut full-length album alongside Danish producer Robin Hannibal. Now, with a hit under her belt, 2007’s “Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)”, and a tour with the former Fugees frontman, Niia has attracted a solid cult following with her rich and soulful vocals and layered lyricism. “If you hear someone singing about tomato sauce on TV, that’s probably me.” It was while she was recording jingles that Wyclef Jean convinced the singer, only eighteen at the time, to ditch her day job. “I moonlit as a jingle singer,” the 26-year old vocalist and recent Los Angeles transplant explains over the phone on a sunny SoCal morning. You might not know Niia by name, but chances are you’ve heard her sing.
